Why Ambient Extraction Exists

Source extraction is always the first choice. However, in heavy fabrication it is not always feasible: the workpiece may be thirty meters long, the welder is constantly moving, the extraction arm cannot follow inside the structure, or the geometry does not allow for a hood.

Ambient extraction manages the fraction that escapes. It is not an alternative to source extraction — it is the second layer that makes the overall exposure figure defensible.

The Compliance Argument

Welding fumes were reclassified as Group 1 carcinogens in 2017. Since then, what is expected in every regulated facility — defense, shipbuilding, classification society oversight — is a documented fume control strategy compliant with EN ISO 21904, not a ceiling fan.
