Why ambient extraction exists
Source capture is always the first choice — get the fume before it reaches the welder’s breathing zone. But in real heavy fabrication, source capture is not always achievable: the weldment is thirty metres long, the welder moves continuously, the arm cannot follow into the structure, or the part geometry simply will not allow a hood.
Ambient extraction handles the fraction that escapes. It is not an alternative to source capture — it is the second layer that makes the overall exposure figure defensible.
The compliance argument
Welding fume was reclassified as a Group 1 human carcinogen in 2017. Since then, the expectation in any audited facility — defence, naval, classification-society supervised — is a documented fume control strategy under EN ISO 21904, not a roof fan. Ambient units are how you close the gap between what source capture gets and what the exposure limit requires.
