Three arguments
Floor space: A horizontal sheet metal stack occupies the most expensive square footage in the building — the area right next to the cutting machine.
Retrieval: Finding a specific plate in a horizontal stack means
moving every plate above it. Crane time, handling risk, damage
to the sheet — every time.
Traceability: This is what matters for defense work. If the supply chain requires sheet metal identification by heat number and certificate, a floor stack is a paperwork exercise with a physical contradiction — the plate you actually took is the one that was on top, not the one on the certificate. Structured, indexed, automated storage means that the identity in the system is the plate that went to the machine. That is a record that survives an audit.
